It’s Italian the first person in the world to have had robotic thoracic surgery to treat lung cancer: Franca Melfi. Franca was born in 1959 in a little village in the province of Cosenza. As a child, she desired to become a doctor, but her mother disapproved, believing it to be a pipe dream. However, she does not give up. With his father's approval, she proceeded to Pisa to study medicine and eventually specialized in thoracic surgery. In the 1990s, he started doing robotic surgery at the Pisa Hospital. Almost nobody in Europe now believes that investing in this area is prudent. But Franca continues her journey. She was the first person in the world to utilize robotic surgery to treat lung cancer in 2001. Numerous worldwide honors have been bestowed upon him for this outstanding achievement. At this moment, she became an instructor for robotic thoracic surgery at the European level. Over the years, she has established 22 Thoracic Lung Surgery clinics across Europe. She is also working diligently to extend the employment of robots into further fields. She achieves success. In 2012, she established in Pisa, Italy, the biggest public facility for robotic surgery in Europe, with the intention of teaching the surgeons of the future. Franca Melfi is now recognized as one of the pioneers of robotic thoracic surgery.
