A more diverse and clearer product for a sport that is becoming more environmentally conscious and will have to sustain an ever more globalized business, necessitating an improvement in the nation's infrastructure. This is how the research "2050: options for the future of sport in Italy," conducted by Istituto Piepoli and submitted to CONI, envisions the Italian sporting landscape in 27 years. And according to the research, the development of lifestyle and consumer values will raise the significance of sport as a social and economic activity sector up to a percentage of GDP in 2050, attributed to the sports macro-sector, which might grow to 3% (twice the current percentage of 1.37%). The study predicts that sustainability will become increasingly important, the betting business model will be disrupted, women's sport will gain popularity, gender-related taboos will be dispelled, and e-sports will become more popular as the line between "muscular" and "cognitive" competitions becomes increasingly blurry.
