Tragedy in Rome: A three-day-old infant was most likely crushed by his mother, who fell asleep while nursing him. The gynecological department of the Roman Pertini hospital was the site of the tragedy on the night of January 7 and 8. In response to the infant's death, the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an inquiry file with the hypothesis of manslaughter. Prosecutors demanded an autopsy. According to procedure, hospital personnel was required to observe the infant's return to the crib after nursing. Co-sleeping is regarded as one of the leading causes of infant mortality, hence the laws specifically prohibit it to prevent any collateral harm. What the prosecutors of the Roman prosecutor will have to establish is whether or not what has been said thus far corresponds to the truth, namely that the woman would have taken the baby in her arms in the late afternoon and the nurse on duty would not have discovered the tragedy until after midnight. In essence, the purpose of the verification of the judiciary is to determine if procedures have been broken and whether negligence has occurred.
