Andrea Bonafede, the surveyor from Campobello di Mazara who lent his identity to boss Matteo Messina Denaro, was arrested today. In the precautionary measure, the preliminary investigation judge (GIP) fears the possibility that Bonafede may be a man of honor. According to the judge, Bonafede, "with the conduct described in the provisional dispute, knowingly 'ceded' his identity to Matteo Messina Denaro and allowed him to preserve his status as a fugitive and, consequently, to continue to play his leading role in the mafia association". The "systematic and not episodic conduct" of Andrea Bonafede "has, concretely, provided a contribution of certainly not secondary importance for the criminal dynamics of the mafia association operating in the province of Trapani, having Bonafede thus allowed Messina Denaro, not only to maintain his absconding, but above all, also through his presence in the territory, to continue to exercise the said leading role of the mafia organization", wrote the GIP.
