According to a SWG poll conducted for Greenpeace Italy, the majority of Italians oppose increased military expenditure: 55% of respondents oppose the government's intention to boost defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2028. Just 23% of the population supports a rise in military expenditure. According to 53% of those polled, "given the present worldwide political and energy scenario," Italy should invest "exclusively" (27%) or "primarily" (26%) in the energy transition. Only 22% feel that the nation should prioritize "fossil fuels and energy transformation" equally. Small minorities advocate for "primarily" (6%) or "exclusively" (3%) investments in fossil fuels in Italy. There is also an overwhelming majority in favor of taxing any additional profits made by gas and oil firms and using the revenues to offset high bills (80%) and invest in renewable energy (76%). More than two out of three Italians (69%) would also like to tax the extra profits of defense companies. Only 12 percent oppose it.
