Italy and its regions are in the top five European green technologies. This is what emerges from a research of the Enrico Fermi Research Center on the distribution of patents within the European Union. Italian green technology capacity focuses on inventions related to technologies in four key macro sectors: reduction of greenhouse gases in the energy sector (31%), mitigation of climate change in transport (19%), in construction (15%) and in the production of goods (15%). Within the key macro sectors, it is found that, with regard to the energy sector, Italy touches the peak of the number of patents filed with respect to the generation of energy from renewable sources (18.8%) and in the class of technologies with potential for the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions (7%), as in batteries and hydrogen and thermal energy storage systems and shows comparative advantages in both. With regard to climate change mitigation in transport, one of the most represented classes is that related to road transport (16.4%), which includes technologies for batteries, electric and hybrid vehicles, to improve efficiency in combustion engine vehicles and for the use of alternative fuels. Among the regions, in first place for the number of green patents is Lombardy followed by Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto.
