164.6 million passengers passed through Italian airports in 2022, more than double the number in 2021, when only 80.7 million travelers were affected by the pandemic and restrictions on movement. Air traffic is therefore recovering, with volumes, for the national system, equal to 85% of those of 2019. During 2022, in fact, the gap with respect to the 193 million pre-Covid passengers has progressively reduced, going from -39% in the first quarter to -12% in the second, up to the record of the summer months, -7%, followed by -9% in the last three months of the year. By analyzing the data by dimensional classes according to pre-pandemic flows, it emerges that in 2022 medium and small airports have driven the recovery in air traffic and many of these have exceeded the levels of 2019.
