The year 2023 begins on a positive note for food waste, with a 13% reduction compared to 2022. It has decreased from about 31 kg per capita per year in 2022 to 27.25 kg in January 2023. Consumerismo No Profit announced this today at the "Dispensa stellata" event held in Rome by the Zampone and Cotechino Modena PGI Consortium. Food waste in our homes is worth a total of 6.48 billion euros, a number that rises when we include the energy value of lost food: relatively to 2023, it is worth 5.151 billion euros, bringing the total economic cost of domestic food waste in Italy to 11.63 billion euros. According to a survey conducted by Waste Watcher in 2023, fresh fruit (24 grams per week) tops the list of foods most frequently wasted by Italians. Daily, we throw away approximately 3.4 grams of fruit and 2.3 grams of bread, which amounts to a little more than and just over 1 kilogram per person per year. Also included in the hit are vegetables, garlic, and onions.
