Due to the hold of inflation on the everyday lives of Italian families, one in three Italians are in a difficult economic situation. The poorest families are the most impacted. The Altroconsumo group was able to picture the present economic situation and the behaviors of Italians, who are compelled to reduce their expenditure or turn to loans, according to a statistical poll of 1,323 Italians. The organization found a sharply worsening economic situation: in April last year, 31% of people surveyed said they had not been able to set aside any savings at the end of the month (and in the previous 12 months). In December 2022, this number jumped to 41%. Therefore, dealing with daily living becomes more difficult: 37% of the sample had to rely on accumulated funds, and 13% had to turn to friends and family for assistance. It is worrisome that many families are unable to satisfy fundamental needs such as paying their bills; in fact, for 42 % of Italians, this expenditure has become virtually unaffordable. 20% of consumers purchase less food; in particular, 31 % buy less meat and fish, while 16 % lower their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
