At the conclusion of a two-day visit to Italy, Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, welcomed assurances from the Italian government that the country will maintain its commitment to protect and find durable solutions for refugees in a context of constant pressure at maritime and land borders. Grandi agreed with Italy's appeal for more cooperation and responsibility among the nations of Europe for those coming in Italy by sea in search of safety from oppression and violence. He reaffirmed that the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has long advocated for agreement on predictable systems for disembarking and redistributing those rescued at sea, as an essential complement to a greater state-led search and rescue capability.
