The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, received at the Quirinale General Teo Luzi, General Commander of the Carabinieri, and Major General Pasquale Angelosanto, Commander of the ROS of the Carabinieri, together with a large representation of officials, marshals, brigadiers, corporals and Carabinieri of the ROS, of the Special Intervention Group and of the Territorial Commands of Palermo and Trapani, who participated in the search and capture operations of the boss Matteo Messina Denaro. As Luzi pointed out, he was the last fugitive mafia boss and mass murderer. The Head of State expressed to them "the gratitude of the Republic", stressing how this success of the action of the judiciary and all the police forces who committed themselves with tenacity and dedication "has manifested the supremacy of the crime law and has strengthened the confidence of citizens in a society free from the presence of the mafia". Mattarella also expressed his congratulations "for the high professional capacity that has allowed this important result to be achieved, expressing great appreciation for the work carried out on many aspects of commitment".
