Refugees and asylum seekers in Italy and Europe have felt the effects of the Coronavirus 19 outbreak and the conflict in Ukraine. This is underlined in a report by the Italian Council for Refugees (CIR). Compared to the 217,735 in Germany, the 137,505 in France, and the 116,140 in Spain, Italy had 77,195 applications for international protection in 2022. Hence, somewhat more than a third (35%) of German asylum claims, 56% of French claims, and 66% of Spanish claims were filed in Italy. There were 52,625 asylum applications reviewed by the Italian government; 53 percent were denied (27,385), while 12 percent were granted refugee status (6,161). In terms of maritime arrivals, 105,140 people arrived on Italian coasts (according to Ministry of Interior figures), and 1,417 people died or went missing in the central Mediterranean (IOM data)." While the Ukrainian crisis has undoubtedly tested the limits of the CIR's receiving and protection infrastructure, it has also demonstrated the critical importance of an open-handed and politically coordinated response." " Temporary protection has been triggered for the first time in Europe, and citizens throughout the continent have been at the forefront of an unprecedented wave of solidarity that has allowed millions of migrants to be welcomed to Europe". The report concludes, "This is a lesson we should learn from and apply to future crises and to all refugees arriving in Italy and Europe, without regard to the nation of origin or the war that caused them to escape."
