"Desperation can never justify traveling conditions that endanger the lives of one's children." Despite condolences in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the government's hard line on migrant management was reiterated yesterday by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. A position that has unleashed a storm of reactions, with NGOs in the front line, now strongly weakened precisely at the behest of the new executive. "The minister should be ashamed, this is a slap to the victims," the organizations responded immediately, requesting that Piantedosi report to the Chambers on the rescue. Piantedosi, who went to the scene of the tragedy, stated that everything possible was done to avoid the shipwreck: patrol boats from the Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza were activated, but the sea conditions did not allow for rescue intervention. Piantedosi also stated that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) could not intervene under any circumstances because they operate through different channels. The minister also mentioned that every day, Italian patrol boats rescue dozens of migrants. As a result, he returned to the government's position: departures must be stopped in order to save lives.
