"May journeys of hope cease to become journeys of death. May such tragic accidents no longer contaminate the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean". This is the appeal that Pope Francis launched yesterday at the conclusion of the Angelus, dedicated to the tragic shipwreck of a Turkish vessel on February 26 in Cutro, Calabria. Francis expressed gratitude and appreciation to the local populace and institutions "for their solidarity and acceptance of our brothers and sisters." Then, he reiterated the appeal addressed to "everyone" so that "similar tragedies do not occur again" and asked for an end to human smuggling. "May human traffickers be stopped from disposing of the lives of so many innocent individuals", the Pope stated.
