The U.S. Air Force has decided to begin initial production of the MH-139A "Grey Wolf" helicopters, allowing Boeing and Leonardo to disclose the contract for the delivery of the initial thirteen units. The commencement of such production activities will result in the delivery of the first operational helicopters in 2024, which will replace the current UH-1N fleet. The Grey Wolf is a multi-mission helicopter based on Leonardo's wildly successful AW139, of which over 1,130 are currently in service around the world. The Grey Wolf is designed to protect intercontinental ballistic missiles and to carry US government and security personnel. Leonardo's collaborative efforts as helicopter manufacturer and Boeing's as prime contractor responsible for militarization and program support are the foundation of MH-139A's strength. Leonardo manufactures the civil-certified multi-mission helicopter at its Philadelphia facility, while Boeing is responsible for acquiring and installing military equipment, as well as providing support after delivery. With a successful model like the AW139 from Leonardo and advanced technology from Boeing, the U.S. Air Force receives the best helicopter to meet its critical operational needs. Advanced capabilities of the MH-139A enable missions to be completed more quickly, quietly, and efficiently. With a 50% increase in speed and range, as well as a 5,000-pound increase in gross maximum weight over the UH-1N, the helicopter is well-equipped to carry out missions assigned by the U.S. Air Force to protect intercontinental ballistic missile sites in the United States.
