Enabling the achievement of the European objectives of the "Fit-for-55" package, promoting the integration of renewable sources, developing interconnections with foreign countries, increasing the level of security and resilience of the electricity system, and investing in grid digitalization. These are the main points of Terna's 2023 Development Plan for the national transmission grid: over 21 billion euros in investments are planned over the next ten years, which is 17% more than the previous Plan. When the entire life of the works included in this Development Plan is calculated beyond the ten-year horizon, the total amount of investment will exceed 30 billion euros. The main innovation introduced by the Plan is the Hypergrid network, which will utilize high-voltage direct current (HVDC) energy transmission technologies to achieve transition and energy security goals. Terna has planned five new electricity backbones, functional to the integration of renewable capacity, for a total cost of approximately 11 billion euros, in addition to the development interventions already planned. This is an impressive modernization operation of existing power lines on the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic backbones of the peninsula and towards the islands, which includes new 500 kV submarine connections, the latter of which is an absolute novelty for the company. With Hypergrid, it will be possible to more than double the trading capacity between market areas, from 16 GW to more than 30 GW. Furthermore, the development of DC backbones will reduce land consumption and the impact on the territory.
