There was a heated debate yesterday in the Chamber during Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's question time. Meloni, pressed on the issue of precarity and poor work by DP Secretary Elly Schlein, responded that "those who have governed so far have made Italian workers poorer. This government must do everything possible to reverse the course," explaining that "the government is not convinced that setting a legal minimum wage is the solution. In my opinion, I would question that the legal minimum wage can become not an additional parameter of guaranteed protections, but a substitute and unique parameter." For Giorgia Meloni, the real problem is too high corporate taxation, which prevents hiring. In her reply, Elly Schlein said that the one in government "is a right wing that is obsessed with immigration but does not see the emigration of so many young people who are forced by such low wages and such precarious contracts to build a future elsewhere". Many topics were addressed upon in the Prime Minister's responses, including some previews, as in the case of tax reform: "Tax reform is one of the issues the government is working on. We are convinced that it is a fundamental factor in revitalizing our economy, encouraging investment, enterprise and ensuring greater wealth and welfare for workers. This is why I am pleased to announce that the tax reform enabling act will be brought to the CoM tomorrow". "The pivotal principles of this reform," she added, "are mainly three: reduction of the tax burden on the citizens and businesses; a new relationship between the state and the taxpayer that is no longer vexatious, but an equal and cooperative one; and a real fight against tax evasion, since the measures taken so far do not seem to have had any effect”.
