As of December 31, 2021, the foreign resident population in Italy amounted to 5,030,716 (-2.7 percent compared to 2020), and 50.9 percent of it is composed of women. The incidence of the foreign component on the total resident population is 8.5 percent. This is according to Istat data published in a press release. There are many considerations and data provided: in 2021, the natural and international migration dynamics of the resident foreign population is largely positive, but the natural balance of resident foreigners (positive in all regions) is decreasing compared to 2019 (-15.4 percent); among foreigners, births decrease (-4.8 percent compared to 2020) and deaths increase (+8.6 percent). Such demographic behavior still seems to be affected by the pandemic impact. Immigrations of foreign nationals are recovering (+27% compared to 2020), after the conspicuous decline due to border closures, but they are not recovering pre-pandemic levels; foreigners reside mainly in northern Italy (59% of the total), where Italian nationals by acquisition are also concentrated (66.5%).
