Ten Italian cancer treatment institutes are among the top 100 in the world. The National Cancer Institute and the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) are the best of the best, and they are both located in Milan (Int). The first one is private, while the second is public. They were ranked 11th and 13th, respectively, in Newsweek's and Statista's 2023 World's Best Specialized Hospitals ranking. The Humanitas Clinical Institute is ranked 25th, the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome is ranked 38th, the Niguarda Hospital in Milan is ranked 41st, the Pascale Institute in Naples is ranked 46th, the Molinette in Turin is ranked 60th, the Oncology Department of the AO of Padua is ranked 64th, the Oncology Unit of San Raffaele in Milan is ranked 78th, and the IRCCS in Candiolo (Turin). The ranking joins Newsweek and Statista's ranking of the world's 300 best "generalist" hospitals, where the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome ranked 38th, first among Italian hospitals. The ranking of the World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2023 is the result of a global survey in which over 40,000 doctors, healthcare professionals, and hospital executives took part between July and August 2022. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals based on their area of expertise, followed by an optional secondary area of expertise in which they are also experts (for example, through frequent collaboration with other medical fields).
