In February 2023, compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed people decreased while the number of employed and inactive people were essentially stable. This is according to Istat surveys. The stability of employment is a summary of the growth observed among men, the self-employed, and all age groups except 35-49 year olds, and the decline recorded, in addition to 35-49 year olds, among women and term employees. The employment rate rises to 60.8 percent (+0.1 points). The number of job seekers decreases on a monthly basis (-0.6%, or -12 thousand) among women, those under 35 and those over 50. The total unemployment rate is stable at 8.0 percent; the youth unemployment rate falls to 22.4 percent (-0.4 points). The stability in the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 is due to growth among women and people over 35 and a concomitant decrease among men and young people. The inactivity rate remains unchanged at 33.8 percent. Comparing the December 2022-February 2023 quarter with the previous quarter (September-November 2022), there is an increase in the number of employed people (+0.4 percent, or +99 thousand). The growth in employment observed in the quarterly comparison is associated with an increase in job seekers (+0.6%, or +11 thousand) and a decrease in the inactive (-1.1%, or -139 thousand). The number of employed in February 2023 exceeds that of February 2022 by 1.5% (+352 thousand units).
