The Italian transmission grid operator Terna yesterday signed contracts with the European Investment Bank for the second and third tranches of the 1.9 billion euros financing for the Tyrrhenian Link, the undersea electricity link that will connect the Italian peninsula to Sicily and the latter to Sardinia. The first 500 million euros tranche, which had been signed on November 8, 2022, and the financings signed thus represent two additional tranches totaling 900 million euros for the construction and commissioning of the "East Branch" and "West Branch" of the Tyrrhenian Link. For the work, which will be fully operational in its entirety in 2028, Terna expects a total investment of about 3.7 billion euros. These loans, which have a term of about 22 years from the first date of disbursement, are characterized by a longer duration and more competitive costs than those of the market, thus falling within Terna's policy of optimizing its financial structure. With this new operation, the total outstanding financing between Terna and the EIB rises to approximately 3.4 billion euros, apart from the remaining 500 million euros related to the additional tranches of the loan for the Tyrrhenian Link, already granted by the Bank.
