Seven thousand kilos of Rana pesto were seized by border inspectors of the Ministry of Health due to alleged irregularities related to the European food law. The cargo, which is located in Genoa, was manufactured at Pastificio Rana's factory in Chicago, which opened in 2012. The jars seized for the European market are thus made in the United States rather than in Italy, as the product's typicality would require under European legislation. The company founded by Giovanni Rana, on the other hand, has filed an appeal with the TAR of Liguria on January 27 to request the suspension and permanent cancellation of the measure. According to the lawyers, the basil would be grown in Genoa, harvested, and frozen before being shipped to the United States and processed for the French and Spanish markets. The administrative judges will now have to decide whether to unblock the cargo or confirm the inspectors' findings.
