Some feats are never forgotten. The one by Giovanni Soldini, in particular, is certainly destined to remain inscribed in history. On May 8, 1999 Soldini won the "Around alone", a solo sailing race around the world. In 116 days, 20 hours, 7 minutes and 59 seconds, shaving 72 hours off the previous record set in 1991 by Frenchman Auguin, Soldini covered the 43,500 km of the race. It was a feat made even more famous by the rescue the sailor made on the third leg of the lap, when he decided to detour to bring to safety Isabelle Autissier, who had capsized with her boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The race started in Charleston, South Carolina, and returned to the starting point by crossing the Atlantic Ocean with a stop in Cape Town (South Africa), the Indian Ocean to Auckland (New Zealand), and the Pacific Ocean to Punta del Este (Uruguay).
