Premium permits for inmates and their interviews with family members were exploited to get smartphones and drugs inside the Syracuse prison of Augusta. This is what emerges from the "Alcatraz" investigation, conducted by the Catania Anti-Mafia Directorate, which led to 11 arrests made by the Guardia di Finanza and prison police. In the case of premium permits, the inmates involved hid the drugs so as to pass controls, while in the second it was the visitors who hid the drug bricks (mostly hashish) and cell phones inside wrappers containing potato chips, baby diapers or fruit juices, which were then trashed in specific garbage containers inside the prison. At this point, a cleaner would retrieve the drugs by handing them over to accomplices, and this would end up feeding the internal drug trade at the Augusta prison: a full-fledged substance ring, complete with a comprehensive and up-to-date price list that varied depending on the quality of the drugs and the level of knowledge of the buyer. As a rule, the price of a brick of hashish was around 1,500 to 2,000 euros, and payment for it would be secured through credits to several Postepay cards in the possession of three alleged accomplices on the loose. In the course of the investigation, three people were arrested in flagrante delicto for possession for the purpose of transferring drugs, and 15 hashish bricks were seized on several occasions, as well as several cell phones.
