Not only art cities, but also villages and small towns in inland areas of the country, with greater impact on Italy's economy. These are the new trends of cultural tourism on vacation in Italy in 2022 that emerge from the survey conducted by Isnart - the National Institute for Tourism Research - for the Observatory on the Economy of Tourism of the Chambers of Commerce. In particular, cultural heritage is the second most important vacation motivation in Italy in 2022, right after nature. Also growing is the desire of cultural tourists to visit new places, off the "traditional routes": this is an interest reported by 20 percent of respondents, compared to 14.3 percent in 2019, and a phenomenon that is a possible reflection of pandemic restrictions, which may have fueled in tourists the desire to "escape" and discover new destinations. Isnart's estimate for 2022 is more than 142 million overnight stays in accommodations and lodging in private homes. Of these, more than half are Italian flows (a 55 percent that translates into 78.8 million presences); the international share stands at 63.6 million.
