11 May, Rome – Here are the funds to offset the high rents. Following university student protests in several Italian cities, as well as the controversy sparked by the words of Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara, the government responds by allocating 600 million euros to encourage university housing, which will support the acquisition of new beds in housing or residences for students of higher education institutions. An answer that does not fully convince the opposition, which is already on the offensive after Valditara pointed out that all of the cities most affected by high rents were governed by the center-left. According to the main research institutes, rents for university students have reached unsustainable levels in recent months: up to 800 euros for a room in Milan (with an average of over 600), and around 500 euros per month in other northern and central university cities such as Turin, Bologna, Rome, but also Naples.
