Uproar, confusion, attempts to escape in a dramatic scenario with an earthquake, lapilli, turbulent currents of volcanic ash and hot gases. It was the hell of the eruption of 79 AD. The one where the inhabitants of the ancient city of Pompeii were found, including the last two victims, whose skeletons have just been found during an excavation in the Insula dei Casti Amanti. The two skeletons are the clear testimony that, during the eruption, it was not only the collapses associated with the accumulation of lapilli or the impact of pyroclastic currents that were the only dangers for the life of the inhabitants of ancient Pompeii, such as the excavations of recent decades are increasingly investigating. The skeletons - found during the process of securing the site - lay on one side, in a service area, at the time abandoned due to probable repairs or renovations underway in the house, in which they were looking for protection. The data from the first anthropological analyzes in the field - published in the E-journal of the Pompeii excavations - indicate that both individuals probably died due to multiple traumas caused by the collapse of the building. They were probably two 55-year-old male. In the room where the bodies lay, some objects also emerged, such as a vertical amphora leaning against the wall in the corner near one of the bodies and a collection of vases, bowls and jugs stacked against the back wall. The most impressive thing is the evidence of damage suffered by two walls, probably due to the earthquakes that followed the eruption.
