Nearly 65 million pets live in Italian households, roughly 9 million of which are dogs and 10 million are cats (the rest are birds and fish). Just under twenty million four-legged beings power the national pet food and pet care market, if only for food. The increase in dogs and cats brings news of all kinds: consider the initiative launched last March by the civic museums of Venice, thanks to an agreement with Bauadvisor, a communication and services portal dedicated to the world of dogs and their owners. "Venice is pleased to promote pet-friendly culture through its museums," Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said, "satisfying new audiences. The service allows you to visit the museum in complete peace while leaving your four-legged friends in the care of a specialized team". Products for feeding dogs and cats generated a turnover of 2.759 billion in the Italian market in 2022, increasing by 11.4% in value (also due to inflation) from 2021. Over 673 thousand tons were sold in volume, representing a 0.8% increase over 2021. Cat products make up 53.8% of total market value, accounting for 1.484 billion, while dog food constitutes 46.2% of the total market value, accounting for 1.275 billion. Over 40% of Italian families now have at least one pet.
