A group of activists from the Ultima Generazione environmental movement poured black, charcoal-like liquid inside the Trevi Fountain. During the action, a small banner for the "we don't pay for the fossil" campaign was also unfurled, and the activists shouted, "Our country is dying," amid insults from passersby and tourists. They were stopped by Rome's local police officers. Only a month and a half ago, the Barcaccia fountain near the Spanish Steps had been targeted. "Fortunately, the first estimate is that there should be no permanent damage because the black paint was deposited all around the waterproofing material, not on the marble, and it should be possible to remove it without permanent damage. The risk is when it goes on the marble, which is porous," said Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. "This will involve significant intervention, cost time, effort and water, because this is a water recycling fountain. Now we will have to empty it, and 300 thousand liters of water, which is the capacity of the fountain, will be thrown away," Gualtieri pointed out.
