The counterfeiting of the Made in Italy brand is worth 90 billion euros a year. This has led the Guardia di Finanza to develop a more incisive operational plan for 2023 to protect the industry. The aim is to curb Italian sounding, a system that, by exploiting words, images, colors and geographical references evocative of the Bel Paese, has allowed the counterfeiting industry to carve out a business worth about 6 percentage points of GDP. This is a damage that has been going on for years and is causing a very serious downturn for Italian industrial districts, to which the loss of tax revenues for the state must be added. Suffice to say that, in 2020, counterfeiting caused a loss in tax revenue of more than 4.8 billion euros. The government has run for cover with a package of regulations to protect the country's system against Italian sounding as well, providing, among other things, for a tightening of criminal measures. The Guardia di Finanza has announced a series of initiatives in collaboration with the eyewear districts of Belluno, cosmetics in Lombardy, fashion in Tuscany, Prosecco in Veneto, agri-food and cured meats in Parma, agri-food in Nocera/Gragnano, upholstered furniture in Matera, footwear in Marche, furniture in Brianza, rubber in Sebino Bergamasco, and chocolate in Alba and Cuneo.
