Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), the Dutch-born American painter and sculptor and one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century, will be the protagonist of a major exhibition at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice scheduled for April 16, 2024, at the opening of the 60th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. The exhibition will be the first to explore the impact that de Kooning's two Italian sojourns, which took place in 1959 and 1969, had on his work. The art he made in Italy and the Italian influence on his subsequent paintings, drawings and sculptures in America has never before been fully considered. The lasting effect of these two creative periods will be revealed through an exemplary selection of works ranging from the late 1950s to the 1980s. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Foundation, a private foundation based on the artist's legacy that fosters studies and insights into Willem de Kooning's life and work through research, exhibitions and educational programs. The curators of the exhibition are Gary Garrels and Mario Codognato.
