Italian participation in NATO missions on the European Eastern Front is increasing as a deterrent to Russia. The economic commitment is increasing, from 216 million in 2022 to 314 million in 2023, in tandem with the increase in operational commitment: 3,400 men (compared to 2,200 in 2022), 620 land vehicles (100 more than in 2022), and thirty aircraft (double the number in 2022). The number of naval units remains unchanged at 5 units. The Milex observatory on Italian military spending announced this in an in-depth analysis of the increases in spending, troops, and means deployed by the Army, Air Force, and Navy in all NATO missions in Eastern Europe.
