On the sidelines of the 77th General Assembly of the Italian Bishops' Conference held yesterday, President Matteo Maria Zuppi wished to recall "the anguish that weighs in the souls of the Ukrainian people who yearn for peace and those who mourn someone who has never returned, swallowed up by the fratricidal death machine that is war". Zuppi has been commissioned by Pope Francis to mediate for a peace agreement in the war in Ukraine. The mission, the cardinal says, is "in agreement with the Secretary of State. It is not strange; the opposite would be strange, like other formal and informal experiences in the past," Zuppi said at the Vatican press conference. The mission, he stressed, must "contribute to easing the tensions of the conflict in Ukraine" with respect to which there is an involvement of the Pope "to the point of tears".
