Beginning in June, an elevator will be accessible to the public inside the Colosseum, allowing all visitors to reach the topmost levels of the cavea and completely appreciate the splendor of the world's most renowned monument. Since its inception, the Colosseum Archaeological Park has included the theme of physical, cultural, and cognitive accessibility in its mission, striving to welcome all members of the public with adequate aids to the visit (signage, tactile maps, easy-to-read guides), and, of course, routes that can overcome height differences. As part of this goal, the PArCo has expanded the Colosseum's already extensive usability by inaugurating an elevator that allows all visitors, with special attention to those with mobility issues, to overcome the 100 steps that separate the first order from the intermediate gallery while enjoying a unique view of the entire monument. The ascent was the result of synergy between the PArCo and the Italian Cinema Orchestra, the 2018 protagonists of a global polio eradication event. Built in full accordance with the PArCo's guidelines and current regulations, the lift is in keeping with the site's character and integrates harmoniously with the monument, minimizing the use of space and preserving the integrity of the existing walls through the use of pressure anchoring points that guarantee the complete reversibility of the work. The ribbon-cutting event was held yesterday in the presence of Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and was preceded by a special performance by the Italian Cinema Orchestra on the memorable notes of Oscar winner Hans Zimmer.
