Due to overbuilding and abandonment, Italy has lost nearly 30% of its farmland in the last half century. The usable agricultural area in Italy has been reduced to just 12.8 million hectares and there is no shortage of effects on the hydrogeological seal of the territory and the country's production deficit, in addition to agribusiness dependence on foreign countries. This is what Coldiretti says on the occasion of World Environment Day celebrated by the United Nations yesterday. The result is that, according to the Ispra research institute, more than 9 out of 10 Italian municipalities (93.9 percent of the total) have part of their territory in areas at hydrogeological risk for landslides and floods also due to the ongoing climate change, with a trend toward tropicalization that manifests itself with a higher frequency of violent events, seasonal displacements, the rapid transition from sun to bad weather and short and intense rainfall. According to Eswd data, an average of 8.8 extreme events per day occurred along the peninsula in 2022 with incalculable casualties and damage. As a result of artificial covers, the soil fails to ensure infiltration of rainwater that flows to the surface, increasing the hydraulic hazard of the national territory.
