Italy, so heavily affected by the climate crisis and so vulnerable, must do its part to address it, contain it and help stop it. Instead, only about two million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year have been cut in the past nine years: at this rate, by 2030 we will cut emissions by only 23 percent, compared to a European target of 55 percent, and we will not reach carbon neutrality in 2050; to meet the European target in 2050 we would have to proceed at the rate of a cut of 14 million tons of CO2 per year, seven times the average of the past nine years. Cities should also increase their climate efforts. Nine cities - Bergamo, Bologna, Florence, Milan, Padua, Parma, Prato, Rome and Turin - are participating in the European project "Mission 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities" and have committed to cutting greenhouse gases by 2030 by implementing advanced initiatives.
