The conditions of women's prison life, with particular regard to the problems of housing, material, psychological and relational needs of prisoners, were at the center of the seminar "Living in women's prison. Spaces, safety, rights," a conference held yesterday in Turin by Aidia, the Italian Association of Women Engineers and Architects, with support from the Regional Women's Council. During the conference, a number of pertinent data emerged. There are 2,504 women incarcerated in Italy (as of 31 May), which accounts for 4.3% of the total population of 57,230. Among them are 20 mothers with 21 children. Piedmont has 153 women inmates out of a total of 3,981 (which is 3.8% lower than the national average). There are only two-family homes in Italy (Milan and Rome) where children can stay with their mothers until the age of 11, and there were 25 children involved as of 30 June 2022.
