During yesterday's summit, the EU Council agreed to approve the two legislative packages on border procedures and asylum management. Thus overcame the impasse on the principle of "connection", i.e., the possibility of transferring migrants who have been refused international protection to a country other than their country of origin, provided that this is judged sufficiently safe and there is precisely sufficient "connection" to be able to proceed with the transfer. The two packages are two key pieces of the Migration Pact. Italy voted in favor of the two packages, in what was broad support for the measures: only Hungary and Poland opposed; Malta, Slovakia, Lithuania and Bulgaria abstained. The axis between Meloni and Orban thus cracks. A common position will have to be found with the European Parliament for final approval. There is satisfaction from Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi: "Italy has obtained consensus on all the proposals put forward during today's Council meeting. First of all, we averted the hypothesis that Italy and all member states of first entry would be paid to keep irregular migrants in their territories. Italy will not be the collection center for migrants on behalf of Europe".
