In Italy, 20% of breast cancer patients are under the age of 40. A significant proportion, equivalent to 11,140 new patients per year, and affecting people who are juggling work and family obligations. This causes enormous problems in terms of social and health. Simultaneously, there is an increase in diagnoses among women over the age of 74, who are now excluded from screening programs. They account for 35% of cases, and in 2022, 20,000 elderly people were affected. It is critical to restructure primary and secondary prevention interventions as soon as possible, taking into account which prevention investigations may be most appropriate for young women, in order to promote early diagnosis and the possibility of recovery. The IncontraDonna Foundation has launched this appeal.
