For the first time in Italy, it will be possible to reduce speed on major roads and highways for environmental or smog reasons beginning today. It is one of the consequences of a government decree law. It states that "in cases where it is necessary to limit emissions from vehicular traffic in relation to pollutant levels in the air, the regions may provide for reductions in vehicle speed of circulation, even permanent, on roads that cross or touch inhabited centers." When the smog worsens, it will be up to local governments to slow down and help reduce pollution, particularly in the Po Valley's major cities. To enforce the new reduced limits, new traffic control technologies as well as deterrence measures such as fines will be available.
