With a leap of 11 percent, it is a historic record for Made in Italy agrifood exports in 2023, growing almost twice as fast as total Italian exports. This is according to Coldiretti and Filiera Italia's analysis of Istat data on foreign trade for the first four months of 2023, released at the Summer Fancy Food 2023 in New York City. Among the main countries, growing the most in 2023 are food exports to France, with a 19 percent jump ahead of Germany (+12 percent), Britain (+12 percent) and the United States (+3 percent). At the overall level, Germany still remains the leading food outlet in the first four months, with a value of 2.6 billion euros ahead of the United States with 2.1 billion euros, which narrowly outpaces France, which ranks third with 2 billion. Positive results also in the United Kingdom with 1.3 billion euros, which highlights how Italian exports proved stronger than Brexit after the initial difficulties related to leaving the EU. Negative figure in China, with a 2% drop, while growing in Russia with +13%, despite the war and sanctions. Abroad, Made in Italy sales are sustained above all by the staples of the Mediterranean diet, such as wine, which stands out on the podium with a 4 percent growth in the first months, ahead of fresh fruit and vegetables, but in the Made in Italy basket abroad pasta, cheese, olive oil and cured meats also play an important role, although at the national level the heavy production deficit in many important sectors from meat to cereals to protein crops needed to feed animals on farms remains to be overcome.
