Fabio Panetta will return, from Frankfurt to Rome, to Palazzo Koch as Governor of the Bank of Italy on November 1 after serving as a member of the European Central Bank's executive board since January 1, 2020. Panetta will be the eleventh after Bonaldo Stringher, Vincenzo Azzolini, Luigi Einaudi, Donato Menichella, Guido Carli, Paolo Baffi, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Antonio Fazio, Mario Draghi and Ignazio Visco who will conclude his mandate started on November 1, 2011 on October 31, 2023. After the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and taking into account the unanimous opinion of the Board of Governors of the Bank of Italy, voted to appoint Panetta as Governor, the relevant decree of appointment will be submitted to the President of the Republic. The Italian banker and economist was born in Rome on August 1, 1959. After graduating from Luiss Guido Carli in 1982 with a degree in Economics and Business, he earned a Master of Science in Monetary Economics from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics and Finance from the London Business School. In 1985, he joined the Bank of Italy as a member of the Research Service. Panetta assumed ownership of the Monetary and Financial Directorate in 1999. He was the head of the Economic and Monetary Policy Research Department from 2007 to 2011. As Accompanying Person to Governor Antonio Fazio and Governor Mario Draghi, he attended Governing Council meetings of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2004 to 2012. Between 2012 and September 2016, he served as the Governor's deputy in the same Council. He was appointed Central Director in July 2011 with the responsibility of coordinating activities related to Banca d'Italia's participation in the Eurosystem and the analysis of financial stability. He was the chief editor of the Financial Stability Report of the Bank of Italy from 2010 to 2012. Panetta, who served as Deputy General Manager of the Bank of Italy from 8 October 2012 until 9 May 2019, joined the Integrated Executive Board of the Institute for the Supervision of Insurance (Ivass) on 1 January 2013. From 2003 until January 2019, he was a member of the Committee on the Global Financial System. Panetta has served in international organizations such as the OECD, the G-10, the Bank for International Settlements, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the International Monetary Fund. He has chaired international working groups within the G-10, the BRI, and other international organizations. From 10 May 2019 to 31 December 2019, Panetta served as General Manager of the Bank of Italy. He was Chairman of the Institute for the Supervision of Insurance (Ivass) from 10 May 2019 to 31 December 2019.
