"It seems to me that the draft conclusion of the European Council is satisfactory for us in the opening, then let's see what will come out". This is the first comment of Council President Giorgia Meloni at the press point upon her arrival in Brussels, yesterday, to attend the first day of the European Council. "As far as migration is concerned, I don't have to remind you that what is written today in the Council's conclusions was probably unthinkable eight months ago," Meloni said, "We really managed to change the point of view, also with the contribution of other nations. From the long-standing division between countries of first landing and countries of secondary movements to a single approach that solves everyone's problems, which is on the external dimension". "The fact that there is a paragraph on Tunisia not in the chapter on migration but on external relations is important," she continued, "it tells of the idea of a strategic partnership with the countries of North Africa that is for us a very important change of step on the role of Europe in the Mediterranean, of which Italy has been the bearer in recent months. She added, "We will see how the agreement with Tunisia goes forward eventually, but I think this is mainly a matter of multi-year budget". As for the ECB strategy, Meloni is clear: "I have already said what I think. On mortgages the government had already intervened, it is a big issue on which we have been sensitive from the beginning. In our financial law we imagined a rule to allow everyone to be able to convert their variable-rate mortgage to a fixed-rate mortgage. More needs to be done, it is one of the subjects I am discussing". But today, Poland and Hungary blocked the deal on migrants, which will now have an uphill battle.
