On the occasion of Automatica, the robotics fair held in Munich, the Italian companies Comau and Fincantieri unveiled a joint product. It is a mobile welding robot that will initially be used on Fincantieri's sites (then sold to third parties) to autonomously weld steel structures, allowing for a threefold increase in productivity compared to the manual process. The apparatus consists of a welding torch mounted on a tracked undercarriage and equipped with an integrated vision system to identify welding joints autonomously. The robot, named MR4Weld, does not completely eliminate human presence, but it is simple to operate and can be managed by a single employee. Comau and Fincantieri have jointly submitted a European patent application for certain technical characteristics; in addition to shipyards, the robot is applicable to all other industrial sectors that produce large steel structures.
