The Italian Senate has banned the production and placing on the market of synthetic food and feed. With 93 yes, 28 no and 33 abstentions, the text now passes to the Chamber of Deputies, which will have to decide whether to confirm it definitively. The vote comes after weeks of political debate in Italy over whether or not this type of food should be banned. Satisfied is the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests, Francesco Lollobrigida, who writes on social media, "Approved in the Senate the bill that puts us at the forefront in the world. We are the first country to ban the marketing, importation and production of synthetic food. Another fundamental step in the only direction the Meloni government knows: that of the national interest. Onward and upward for Italy."Banning the production and marketing in Italy of cultivated meat means cautiously protecting the health of citizens and defending the quality of our agrifood production and cuisine," said Senate Vice President Gian Marco Centinaio, head of the League's Agriculture and Tourism Department. "Let research go ahead, guarantee us the maximum safety of lab-produced food, and then we will talk about it again. Let it be clear that we will always prefer the variety of flavors, properties and dishes that only meat that comes from our farms can guarantee, certainly not that produced in the laboratory".
