The Caltanissetta Court of Appeal confirmed the life sentence for Matteo Messina Denaro, a mafia boss accused of being one of the instigators of the massacres in Capaci on May 23, 1992, and Via D'Amelio on July 19, 1992, in which judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were killed. Therefore, the panel, presided over by Judge Maria Carmela Giannazzo, granted the request of the attorneys general Antonino Patti, Fabiola Furnari, and Gaetano Bono for the former fugitive, who was apprehended by the ROS on January 16 after thirty years on the run. Adriana Vella, a lawyer, has been hired to represent the boss, who is currently imprisoned in L'Aquila. Messina Denaro has declined to connect from prison to hear the Court's decision, in addition to having never participated in the hearings via video-link.
