Yesterday morning, President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella attended the ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the air raids on the Tiburtino - San Lorenzo district, which took place in the park of the fallen of July 19, 1943, in the San Lorenzo neighborhood of Rome. The ceremony honors the victims of the Anglo-American air raid that occurred during World War II. The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, welcomed the head of state, recalling the significance of the historical event: "Many of the wounds of that day are still visible today, like the signs that remained in the conscience of the Romans next to the awareness of the horrors that the senseless war unleashed by Nazism and fascism brought with it, with bombs, round-ups, mourning, deportations, and the absolute abyss of evil represented by the Holocaust." The atrocities of July 19, 1943 contributed to the entrenchment of anti-war sentiments among Italians, thereby reinforcing the values that are still deeply ingrained in our Constitution". Associations of partisans and fighters with their banners, in addition to representatives of institutions, attended the event. Mattarella laid a wreath at the memorial to those killed in the bombing.
