"Mass illegal immigration harms everyone, so we need a shared commitment and increased collaboration to combat the trafficking network." This is the goal announced yesterday by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the opening of the Conference on Development and Migration, held at the Farnesina and attended by leaders from almost all of the southern shores of the enlarged Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Gulf, EU states of first arrival and some partners from the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, as well as European Union representatives. Meloni stated at the summit's conclusion that the conference was "the beginning of a path that we like to call the 'Rome process.'" The prime minister reiterated that the Italian idea of governing migration by combating human trafficking "is not an abstract idea," but that it cannot be realized without collaboration. As a result, the event marked the first step in the Mattei Plan, which Italy will demonstrate in November at the Italy-Africa Conference.
