The scorching heat is "burning" fruit and vegetables in the fields, resulting in crop losses of up to 90% in some farms, ranging from peppers to melons, watermelons to grapes, tomatoes to eggplants. This is the warning issued by Coldiretti in response to the heat wave that is affecting Italy, not only on people but also on farms and crops that have been spared by bad weather and hail that have caused millions of euros in damage in the countryside. All along the country, the heat is creating several problems, and farmers are attempting to protect their crops by shading them with grass and leaves. According to Coldiretti, hot burns permanently damage fruit and vegetables, rendering them unsellable. When possible, we try to anticipate the harvest, or we provide for the thinning of the fruits on the trees, eliminating those that are unable to survive, in order to save at least some of the production.
