In Italy, the number of municipalities that are "waste-free" has increased: in 2022, the number of municipalities with an annual per capita waste production of less than 75 kilograms increased to 629 (+39 from the previous edition). The initiative's highest number achieved thus far. Furthermore, while the South continues to grow with 176 waste-free municipalities (28%), the North retains the lead with 423 (67.2%, +32 new municipalities). The analysis is included in the thirty-first edition of "Comuni Ricicloni," the historic Legambiente dossier that assesses, rewarding the most virtuous results, the commitment of Italians and individual communities to separate waste collection and disposal. The most significant increase is seen in Sicily, which more than doubles the number of waste-free municipalities (from 9 to 23), and Sardinia, which triples it (from 10 to 30) and takes first place in the ranking "One Hundred of These Consortia" under 100 thousand inhabitants with the Mountain Community of Gennargentu Mandrolisai. Of the 629 virtuous municipalities, 409 have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, 180 have between 5,000 and 15,000, and 36 have more than 15,000. Few centers with a population of more than 30,000 people, where the challenges of efficiently managing collections are greater if not properly designed and organized.
